About The “Outdoor Skills Challenge”
The Outdoor Skills Challenge is an opportunity for experienced Scout Leaders to demonstrate their mastery of the outdoor skills taught within the Introduction to Outdoor Skills (ITOLS) course and to accordingly receive training credit for having attended the ITOLS course.
Who May Register?
A maximum of 30 leaders will be accepted into the event. Priority is given to Scout Leaders currently registered as “top leaders” (Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, and/or Venturing Crew Advisors) for their unit(s). Scout leaders should have extensive outdoor and Scouting experience (former Eagle scouts, Philmont and camp staff, Scoutmasters with 5+ years experience, former scouts with extensive military outdoor skills, or SAR and NOLS staff, etc). Final decisions regarding eligibility will be made by the Pioneer Trails District Training Chair.
How Does The Event Work?
Leaders must arrive with all of the appropriate outdoor clothing (weather appropriate) and proper outdoor equipment ready to spend the night. (See pages 264-266, 270-276, 292-295 in the Scout Handbook (12th Ed.). (You won’t really spend the night, but there will be an equipment shakedown similar to what a Scout Leader would expect of a scout beginning an overnight camping trip.)
The Scout Leader will be given a checklist of 40 outdoor skills. This list is drawn directly from the Scout rank requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class ranks, as well as from the skills taught within the ITOLS syllabus. The scout leader will then move from station-to-station, in any order, demonstrating each skill according to the performance standards from the Scout Handbook and receiving a signoff from the examiner at each station.

A passing score is 85% (showing that the Leader has mastered 34 of the 40 skills a Boy Scout must master for First Class rank).
Cost of The Event
Early registration will be $25 (same as the ITOLS course). On-site registration will be $30. (There will be no refunds offered to no-shows. Email Jim Rooney if you have registered and cannot attend.)
