Denver Area Council Scouting Family:
We wanted to make you aware that the National Boy Scouts of America organization has announced the annual membership fee will increase to $24 effective January 1, 2014. This does include units with a December 31, 2013, expiration date.
100% of the annual membership fee is paid directly to the National Boy Scouts of America. In order to continue to deliver the nation's foremost youth program, it is occasionally necessary to increase membership fees to offset rising administrative costs. For this reason, the Boy Scouts of America is increasing its membership fee from $15 to $24 per year for all registered Scouts and adults effective January 1, 2014. For those who join after the beginning of the year, the fee will be prorated at $2 per month. This does include units with a December 31, 2013, expiration date.
The Boy Scouts of America last increased fees in 2010. Since that time, National BSA has taken additional steps to control and reduce costs, but administrative costs have continued to rise faster than projected. The National Executive Committee began discussions about increasing membership fees in 2012. During the May meeting, the executive board appointed a committee comprised of board members, Scout executives, and regional volunteers to examine this topic further and make a recommendation. This past week, the executive committee approved the recommendation to increase membership fees.
The National BSA uses membership fees to support local Scouting by:
• Developing program materials and resources that are relevant to today’s youth.
• Delivering quality and increasingly convenient training for volunteer leaders and staff.
• Providing a safe environment for Scouts with the most effective youth protection policies and systems.
• Maintaining infrastructure support for local councils such as membership and advancement databases.
• Continuing to improve the capacity of the National BSA to keep Scouting up-to-date with newer technologies.
The annual membership fee is the only direct cost from the National BSA to youth and adult members. All other services from the National BSA are without additional charge. Scouting remains one of the best values among the many activities your family can choose. Even with this fee increase, it only costs $2 per month to be part of the once-in-a-lifetime adventures and leadership development programs you can only find in Scouting.
As always, our focus is to build the leaders of this country by combining adventure, educational activities and lifelong values. This will help ensure that the National BSA will be able to continue providing the excellent services you and your family count on – and will make sure that we can continue doing great things for the young people and communities we serve.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your District Executive. Thank you for your service to the young people of our area. We are truly grateful.
Yours in Scouting,
Boy Scouts of America, Denver Area Council
