Shooting Sports

The Shooting Sports Program strives to provide a safe and rewarding experience for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venture Crews. The proper KnowledgeSkill, and Attitude are emphasized by all Instructors, Coaches, and Range Safety Officers for all of the following discipline areas: Archery, BB Gun, Home Firearm Safety, Rifle, Shotgun, Muzzleloader, Pistol, and Tomahawk.

Sporting Clays 3 Gun 4 Fun

Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25, 2016
9:00 am - 4:00 pm both days

Join us on Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25, 2016 at Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch/Travis Family Sporting Clays Facility for Sporting Clays - Shotgun on Saturday and 3 Gun on Sunday and camp at Adventure Valley on Saturday night.

This event is open to all registered Venturers and adults. There is a minimum of 15 people needed to make this event happen and space for only 50. Register early to avoid disappointment! Registration closes on September 21, 2016.

Bring your own meals and any personal equipment needed for the day or camping...it may be cold, so plan ahead.

Costs:

Sporting Clays (Saturday...includes ammo and targets)
$25 for 5 stations
$35 for 10 stations
$45 for 15 stations
All prices are per person

Shooting Sports Merit Badge Day

Saturday, October 1, 2016
8:00 am - 4:30 pm

The Shooting Sports Committee of the Denver Area Council is proud to announce the Shooting Sports Merit Badge Day at Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch on Saturday, October 1, 2016.

This event is being offered in addition to the Bass Pro Merit Badge Day training events to allow Scouts to work on completing their shooting requirements to earn their Rifle, Shotgun or Archery merit badges.

Costs for this event are as follows:

Rifle Merit Badge
$20 - 100 Rounds 10 Targets

Additional Time - $10 - 50 Rounds 5 Targets

Shotgun Merit Badge
$30 - 50 Rounds 50 Targets

Additional Time - $15 - 25 Rounds 25 Targets

Archery Merit Badge
$15 - 100 Arrows (Free Refills)

Additional times must be paid separately on the day of the event. Please provide your Scouts with a blank check made payable to DAC.

Scouts who already have these badges are also invited to participate to improve their skills or learn something new.

Make sure to bring a water bottle, sack lunch, and your 30 minute Range Briefing completion card. Scouts without this card will not be allowed to shoot until they complete the 30-minute briefing and the briefing may not be available.

For Scouts working on completing their requirements, make sure you bring your signed Blue Card too. Scouts that attended a Shooting Merit Badge at Summer Camp, please bring your partially filled out Blue Card.

Shooting Sports Bikeathalon

Saturday, October 22, 2016
9:00 am - 2:00 pm

The Shooting Sports Bikeathalon is a shooting and biking event. You will ride a defined course then shoot targets. Awards will be presented for the top three in each category. Shooting will include Rifle, Shotgun, and Archery.

The Bikeathalon will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Costs are $35 per individual or $50 per unit team of 3. 

Please bring your bike, helmet, pads and eye protection.

NRA/NMLRA Muzzleloader Instructor Course

Saturday and Sunday, October 29 - 30, 2016
8:00 am - 6:00 pm

The course goal is to develop NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Muzzleloader Course. Course will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 29-30, 2016, 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch.

Please bring a 3-ring binder, pen, pencil (for the test), note paper, eye and ear protection, adequate clothing for the outdoor session to include a long-sleeved shirt or jacket made from a non-synthetic material; sleeping gear if staying overnight. Meals are provided.

NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT) certification within the last 2 years is a prerequisite for this course.

NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT)

Saturday, January 14, 2017
8:00 am - 4:00 pm

To be certified as an NRA Instructor, students must complete this course that teaches material common to all NRA Instructor courses. This course does not certify the instructor candidate to teach any NRA courses. Additional discipline-specific instructor training is required to certify candidates to teach specific courses. 

This course will be held at Hamilton Scout Headquarters on Saturday, January 14, 2017, from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to sign in and receive course materials.

Please bring a 3-ring binder, pen, pencil (for the test), highlighter, and note paper. No lunch is provided, please bring your own lunch, snack, and beverages.

Cost of this course is $75 per participant.

NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO)

Saturday, January 28, 2017
8:00 am to 6:00 pm

The course goal is to develop NRA Certified Range Safety Officers who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations. 

This course is a prerequisite for the DAC Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) course. The SOP course scheduled for February 11, 2017, is also required to be able to conduct operations on Denver Area Council ranges.

This course will be held at Hamilton Scout Headquarters on Saturday, January 28, 2017, from 8:00 am - 6:00 pm. 

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to sign in and receive course materials.

Please bring a 3-ring binder, pen, pencil (for the test), highlighter, and note paper. No lunch is provided, please bring your own lunch, snack, and beverages.

DAC Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Course

Saturday, February 11, 2017
8:00 am to 2:00 pm

This course covers Denver Area Council (DAC) range operation topics such as, live fire operations, firearm and ammunition limitations, reservations, issuing and returning equipment, DAC emergency procedures, private property approval, etc.

This is a required course that allows NRA Certified Range Safety Officers to operate Denver Area Council ranges. Candidates who successfully complete the SOP course receive a photo ID badge that is valid for 2 years from the completion of the course.

The course will be held at Hamilton Scout Headquarters on Saturday, February 11, 2017, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. 

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to sign in and receive course materials.

Please bring a 3-ring binder, pen, pencil (for the test), highlighter, and note paper. No lunch is provided, please bring your own lunch, snack, and beverages.

Cost of this course is $15 per participant.
